OP Youth Voting starts on March 19th

What if suddenly it was the young people deciding that in the leisure area of their school there is a table football or ping-pong? If students from a school in Cascais could propose to the City Council buy more tablets or chalkboards? Or buy school equipment for a radio school? Or even if the school has mobile phone charging stations? In a more natural perspective, to the school have a budget to maintain a vegetable garden where vegetables or fruits can be produced that help make food healthier? And even if you can have natural juice machines?

Not only is it possible as real. In the Young Participatory Budgets of Cascais are the young people who decide and the voting starts on March 19th. Over four days, between March 19th and 22nd, about 13,000 students from 14 schools in the county will decide which projects up to 2,500 euros they intend to see executed in their schools. At the same time they are called to decide on projects for the community, to integrate in the OP Cascais 2018, and for the Participative Budget Schools, launched by the Ministry of Education.

As in a process of Local, National or European electoral suffrage, students will be called to the polls placed in strategic locations and functioning at times published in each school. They will have to present their student card before the voting board and vote in conscience, marking an "x" by category.

"This is the great asset of a process of this nature in which all the work is done by the young people themselves", explains Joana Pinto Balsemão, councilor of Citizenship in the City Hall of Cascais. "The Cascais Young Participatory Budget implies that young people are the protagonists in the definition of norms and presentation of ideas, in the monitoring of the technical analysis phase, in the voting and counting of votes. They are also accompanying the execution of the winning projects and are highlighted at the inauguration ... everything is part of this democratic process and citizen participation, "adds the councilwoman.

It is important to mention that all the projects for the School will be implemented by the end of the year, and it will be noticed: the completion rate of the Young OP 2016/17, the first year of the Cascais City Hall initiative was 100%.
