It was yesterday, at 07:27 a.m., that the test of swimming of the Ironman 70.3 began, in the second edition of the race in Cascais. First came the professional athletes and only then the amateurs, in a record total of 2661 participants.
The complete course had 1.9 kilometers of swimming, 90.1 kilometers of cycling and finished with 21.1 kilometers of running, that went as far as Carcavelos.
The cycling event ran along the Avenida Marginal, passing through Oeiras, Alcântara, Estoril and then to the Serra de Sintra, for a total of 90.1 kilometers. Finally, we followed the 21.1 kilometers of race, which crossed the Vila de Cascais, entering Marginal and returning to the Bay of Cascais.
The winner, the spanish Fernando Alarza, finished the course at 03.55, leaving João Silva in second position at 2.26 minutes, and Filipe Azevedo at third, at 2.44.
José Estrangeiro finished the Portuguese podium, finishing in eighth place, 7.41 of the winner, while Bruno Pais, who fulfilled his farewell to the professional triathlon, was not beyond the 19th place, at 27.51.
In the women's section, the winner was Agnieszka Jerzyk, who finished the race at 4:06 p.m., followed by Belgian Katrien Verstuyft and Briton Sarah Lewis.
Ana Filipa Santos was the best Portuguese in the race, finishing the triathlon event in eighth place, more than 24 minutes from the winner.
This event also counted with more than 300 volunteers from Cascais Sports Volunteer, the newly created Cascais Jovem volunteering program that runs year-round. They were facilitating and expediting pedestrian crossings throughout the race, distributing water and food along the way, and hosting other volunteers arriving at the store.
