On Tuesday, we shared with you the goal of sustainable development number 14, which concerns the protection of marine life and aims to conserve and use the oceans, seas and marine resources sustainably for sustainable development.


As it has become habitual, we share with you now some ideas and some initiatives that not only inspire you but also provide experiences that will change your life and that of those who are close to you.

The creation of the Marine Protected Area of ​​Avencas aims at the protection of marine habitats of great ecological importance in an area of ​​high anthropogenic pressure. In addition to actions for spatial planning and environmental management, awareness actions are planned with a high impact on the school public. The main objectives are the preservation of marine life and the protection of the intertidal rocky habitat, as well as the environmental awareness of all its users.

The AquaSig Cascais is a base project for the characterization and monitoring of the Cascais Sea. In addition to surveying all environmental sensitivities and biological and geophysical characterization of the Cascais maritime area, it is an active management tool, mapping all economic activities in the area. The main objectives of the project are to biologically monitor the entire coastal zone of the county and to evaluate potential sites for the creation of new marine protected areas of municipal management.


Clean Up the Atlantic is an environmental awareness campaign carried out over the last nine years in the Bay of Cascais. It joins every year hundreds of volunteer divers to perform an underwater cleaning in the Cascais Sea. At the same time, land-based cleanings are carried out in the coastal zone of the municipality. The main objectives of this campaign are to raise awareness among the general population about the problem of marine litter, with a certain amount of marine litter withdrawn annually.


Jerónimo Martins assumes responsibility for knowing the impacts of its activity on ecosystems, seeking to mitigate them by adopting policies, strategies and operational processes. The Sustainable Sourcing of Fish project is about this.


Taking into account the high volume of annual sales of fish, we have defined as a priority the characterization of the best-selling fish species in Portugal and Poland. This analysis of the risk level for the Group identified aspects such as the degree of exploitation of stocks, surrounding communities, traceability, associated working conditions and impacts on ecosystems, and concluded that none of the species traded were at high risk.


In 2016, the degree of vulnerability of all fish species marketed in Portugal and Poland, based on the classification of the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) and the Convention on International Trade and Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).
