Cigarette butts collected on the beaches

During the last three months, the cigarette butts that were in the containers of the image were collected on the beaches of Cascais. This work was in charge of the volunteers of the summer program Maré Viva.

All these cigarette butts will be deposited in a cube next to the CIAPS, in São Pedro, where they have been accumulating for some time.

Each cigarette butts contaminates up to 6 liters of water and takes 10 to 12 years to get rid of, never quite decomposing. This collection also serves to sensitize smokers so as not to throw cigarette butts to the floor. One of the tasks of the marezinhas is to distribute beach ashtrays, which are also available in the stands next to the access to the beaches.
