The Grand Foundo New York (GFNY), the first event of the international cycling circuit, was held for the first time in Cascais yesterday, September 9, and brought to Cascais 409 cyclists and 200 of them were Portuguese.
The challenge of personal resistance was open to amateurs and professionals, who competed against the clock and against other athletes, and simulated a true Grand Fondo Italiano: with time control by chip, signage along the course, results based on general times, medal for the participants, trophies and jerseys for the male and female general champions, as well as podium by age group.
The GFNY is currently the competition that brings together the largest number of cyclists of different nationalities. In 2016, the New York race featured athletes from 93 countries. The average age of the competitors is 41 years and, proportionally, it is the proof that brings together the female audience (19%).
Founded in 2010, the GFNY brand is present in several cities in the four corners of the world, arriving in Cascais in 2018.
The Portuguese Vítor Lourenço, in general masculine, and Catarina Simões, in general feminine, were the two great winners of the test.
This is the largest Cycling Marathon in the World from Cascais passed through important regions such as Estoril, Sintra, Malveira, Mafra, Ericeira, among others, in a route of Granfondo (162 kilometers), but also included another one of Mediofondo (82 kilometers , this one without competitive strand).
The nationalities of the athletes that participated in this first GFNY Portugal were 38, which also led Carlos Carreiras, Mayor of Cascais, to emphasize the relevance of the event to the prestige of the county outside of Portugal. The president stressed that the proof is of great international projection and that it is of great importance to offer a diversity of quality offers to all citizens.
